Just a heads up to all you art lovers in the area!   This Saturday between 5-8:30pm SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS and come to an awesome show at the Sanitarium in SLO.  Featured artists are joey Salazar, Vincent Bernardy, Joe Tomei, Rober MAJA & Suzie Bliss.  Art, live music and wine tasting at this free, open to the public event.

As we drove down the winding, increasingly narrow road I could see Jesse’s eyes watch tree branches pass quickly over us.  The mid-morning sun was flashing through the leaves, lighting them up like Christmas lights in fall colors.  Red…yellow…orange…and over again.  We were driving down See Canyon, by way of Avila Valley, for the goal of picking tasty apples that are so plentiful out there.  I always forget that travelling there is half of the enjoyment, too.

I finally have a shopping buddy for the Wednesday Farmer’s Market by our house, though I have to say he didn’t seem as excited as I was about it.  Maybe that’s just because he’s not on solid foods yet…

Jesse and I saw some beautiful summer squash and zucchini for a very thrifty price and we could not resist!

On the menu for lunch:  Zucchini and Squash Ribbons

A quick toss in the pan with some salt, pepper, and a spray of oil.  Add some parsley and garlic if desired, then a MUST:  top with Parmesan cheese!

A beautiful day to be out before this area feels the bite of fall approaching.  This might be my favorite time of year….the fog of summer has vanished, the stiffling heat of late summer has come and gone, and we still have time to enjoy the best fruits (and veggies) of the season!

Okay so I’ve already plugged this place before, but I got a mini-thrill seeing my photos in a Central Coast Magazine ad :)  New Times makes me excited enough!

Have a great weekend….and if you’re not doing anything, cruise by Sea Venture for some really great food.  It’s one of our favorite places for mini-date nights (sit at the bar with a 180 degree ocean view and split an appetizer or two…perfect)!

Since I’ve already OFFICIALLY announced the start of summer, what could be a better summer activity than the Drive In?  San Luis Obispo has one of the few Drive In Theaters that remain in business today:  The Glorious Sunset Drive In!  From what I can tell, California’s Drive In Theater count is said to be anywhere from 8 to 20 that are currently in business…I feel lucky to have grown up with many nights at this landmark through out the years.

There is nothing better than packing the car full of pillows and blankets, candy, popcorn and your favorite beverage, with a double feature in front of you and a night time summer sky above.

YES, you’ve got to brave the crowded rows of mini-vans, trucks and roaming children to find your perfect spot.  YES, you will forget to run to the bathroom or snack bar before the intermission, forcing you to wait in lines that rival free ice cream day at Ben & Jerry’s, while those precious interim minutes tick by.  And YES, you will inevitably spill popcorn, candy or your favorite beverage (or all 3, ahem…) in the darkened cavern that is your car.  Drive slow.  Meet new friends in line.  Bring extra napkins.

Did I mention the awesome cartoons during intermission?  I was hoping to see the classic ones they still showed when I was younger, “Let’s all go to the Lobbbby” with the dancing hot dogs!  (What they showed was still pretty awesome in it’s 70’s glory.)

These are small prices to pay for an experience that at one point could have rivaled baseball as a national past time.  (Another “small price” is the mere $6 charge for two brand new movies.)  So pack the cooler, load up the car and get the heck out of your house to take advantage of a classic summertime joy.
